Dr. W. Edwards Deming had worked with Dr. Shewhart at Bell. In 1938 he arranged for Dr.Shewhart to give a series of lectures on the industrial application of statistics. Dr. Deming also took the opportunity to train several thousand people in the use of Dr. Shewhart's techniques during the Second World War, when he worked in both the American defence industry and on the National Census (an early application of SPC in a non-manufacturing environment).
But the great leap forward for both Dr. Deming and SPC came after the war.
