Control Charts

Dr. Shewhart therefore developed control charts to monitor processes and identify the presence of these areas of uncontrolled variation, which he considered to be assignable (identifiable) causes of variation. His aim was, by the use of these charts, to eliminate these assignable causes and thus reduce the variability of the process' outcomes.

Dr.Shewhart published his first control chart in 1924, and his book, The Economic Control of Quality of Manufactured Product in 1931. Unfortunately for both Dr. Shewhart and Western industry, his ideas were largely ignored in America.

However, one person did understand the significance of Dr.Shewhart's work and was determined to make it more widely known.
