Equipment Covered by the EMC Directive




The EMC Directive applies to apparatus liable to cause electromagnetic disturbances or whose normal operation may be affected by such disturbances.

The manufacturer, his/her authorized representative or the person who places a product on the EEA market or take it into service has to find out whether his product is coverd or not by the EMC Directive and to apply its provisions, if required.

The following types of apparatus (the list is not exhaustive) are fully quoted in the scope of the EMC Directive :

  • Electrical household appliances, portable tools and similar equipment;
  • Fluorescent lighting luminaries fitted with starters;
  • Industrial manufacturing equipment;
  • Information technology equipment
  • Domestic radio and television broadcast transmitters;
  • Educational electronic equipment; etc.

Passive EMC equipment is excluded from the scope of the EMC Directive. The following types of equipment can be considered EMC passive and are not covered by the EMC Directive.

  • Cables and cabling systems containing only resistive loads without any automatic switching device;
  • Resistors and equipment containing only resistive loads without automatic switching device;
  • Batteries and accumulators
