Modern Pressures

As the population of the world has grown to around 3000M and is doubling every 33 years (The UK population is a rather static 60M), then we can no longer assume that the world's resources will last forever. The improvements global communication and especially in television convey daily images of American and European life styles into televisions in developing countries. and so the populations of many countries aspire to a higher standard of living . In order to raise their standard of living these people will start to consume (and pollute ) at increasing rates.

The adjacent figure indicates the annual impacts of one single person in an office. In addition we also produce quantities of Nitrogen dioxide, Carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide and CFC's, ChloroFluoroCarbons.

On a global scale there is now conclusive evidence that the atmospheric pollution that our forefathers had presumed would disperse has actually started to affect the Earth's climate by two main mechanisms.

  1. The hole in the ozone layer arising from the release of CFC's which are ozone depleting substances typically used as working fluids in refrigerators, solvents for degreasing and as propelling agents in aerosols and foams. BOX on OZONE DEPLETION

  2. The enhanced greenhouse effect which has principally resulted from the combustion of fossil fuels. BOX on GLOBAL WARMING
