West Midlands Footprint
	Water treatment requires energy, materials and land. The concept of sustainable Development is important here. Our life style can only be maintained if we can provide all of the energy, materials, food and water etc. that we need from the land area that we have. A crude indicator of reaching a sustainable level is given by the size of our environmental FOOTPRINT. For the West Midlands for example the footprint is at least four times and may be as much as eight times the physical area of the West Midlands. If we were restricted to using the UK only to furnish our energy, materials and food we would be in great difficulties
