Environmental Management Systems (EMS)

Introduction
Unit 3
Responsibilities for Implementing an EMS

In many companies, responsibility for implementing an EMS will be handed to a senior manager, usually the operations, quality or health and safety manager. However, without the active interest and involvement of other senior managers and directors, he or she will find it difficult to obtain the resources required for implementation.

Having decided on the type of EMS to implement, organisations should appoint a Management Representative to manage the implementation and an Environmental Steering Group to drive the implementation forward.
