The ESG is the project support team. The team should be drawn from all parts of the organisation to ensure ownership and cooperation for the EMS implementation programme throughout the organisation. They are also a key element in communicating the message out to other people in the organisation. An important member of the team is the Management Representative. He/she is likely to chair the Group. Other members should ideally include a representative from each line management function - production, design, quality, maintenance, sales and marketing and administration.

The structure of the team will differ from organisation to organisation depending on management style and culture, and various other factors such as: Who was responsible for initiating the project? - this person may be given responsibility for implementing the EMS. Which of the operations has the most significant impacts? - personnel who work at that site know it better than those who don't.
