Typical Programme for the Establishment of Environmental Procedures

Identification

What procedures are needed

Those required by the EMS standard

and those to control operational activities associated with the organisations significant aspects

Drafting the Procedure

Should be drafted by the personnel who will have to implement and use the procedure because of their practical knowledge of what is workable, and effective in meeting the requirements.

Piloting the Procedure

Pilot a draft procedure or review the procedure with the ESG.

Revising Procedure

Revise procedure and consult opinions of those who will use the procedure to maximise the feelings of participation in the implementation programme

Implementing Procedures

When implementing a procedure, ensure that all personnel:

  • Are aware of it
  • Understand it
  • Are familiar with its requirements
  • Are training to follow it

Review Procedures

Ensure that procedures reviewed at defined intervals:

  • Intervals may vary from one procedure to another
  • Who reviews the procedure will vary - perhaps by author?
  • Results of review implemented and copies updated

Tasks:
Write draft procedures for the following activities:
  • Managing special waste disposal through off site contractors
  • Monitoring compliance with legislation, and keeping the register of legislation up to date
  • Communicating environmental information with interested parties
