The external auditor, will check the reliability and coverage of the data and information in the environmental statement. He/she will want to make sure that all the sites significant impacts are included and that the data quoted is accurate. If the external auditor is satisfied with the results of the examination he/she will validate the company's environmental statement.

If the external auditor is not satisfied with the environmental statement or identifies areas where EMAS requirements are not met, recommendations will be made which the company must implement before the statement can be validated.
