Step 2: Gather Information

STEP 2 is the information gathering exercise to identify what materials are used and what wastes are produced. In this step detail of all the various inputs and outputs to processes are required although at the initial level a qualitative survey identifying where the major sources of waste appear to be, (where employees "feel" most waste is produced) may be sufficient. In the second phase the qualitative survey will be followed by more quantitative measurement, for example a qualitative skip audit might only look at the type of material going to waste, a quantitative survey will measure how much of each material goes to waste.
