Inputs and Outputs |
|
The inputs and outputs of the process may not be immediately apparent below are some examples for the baked bean process: |
|
Inputs |
Raw materials; Zinc, Flour, Ancillary materials; These are essential to the manufacture but do not exist in the final product, e.g. cleaning materials, Supplier packaging - used in the delivery & storage of raw & ancillary materials Consumables - overalls, paper towels, sticky tape, pens |
|
Outputs |
Product loss - correct specification but dropped, or washed into the drain By-products - produced as consequence of the manufacture - heat, sludge, equivalent to CO2, in the beer brewing process Rejects- off specification materials, degraded materials, e.g. burnt beans! Supplier packaging- associated with deliveries Excess - overmade, superfluous to requirement Start up & shutdown - General - consumables, leaks, spillage, discarded clothing, paper cleaning materials |

The initial review provides a broad picture of the operations it could indicate some areas to investigate further but is generally seen as a 1st stop to provide the background for the programme, for some companies this may be sufficient to begin but most go on to detailed process flow. |
Task 3: | Review one process within your company that you are familiar with listing all the inputs and outputs, if you are not familiar with any particular process investigate a well documented process such as steel smelting, paper making and carry out the same process. |
