Task 6

Task 6:

A successful waste minimisation programme needs to involve and educate the entire workforce. For example segregating waste, i.e. separating plastics, from waste paint from paper etc may appear to have little effect could be ignored unless the reduction in disposal costs and opportunities for recycling are explained. Raising awareness of the cost benefit of switching lights off or covering the waste skips so the company doesn't end up paying for the disposal of rainwater can lead on to innovative ideas for waste minimisation later in the programme. In addition raising awareness of the real costs of landfill, materials spilled, energy associated with over production, and loss in sales through off specification products can encourage new methods of working and improvements in efficiency. These strategies prove beneficial in the long run safeguarding jobs by involving and educating the workforce at all levels and raising their awareness of the costs of "doing business".

With this statement in mind and using the opportunity checklist and waste reduction prompts attached write a report outlining your waste minimisation strategy for the company. Include details of how you would advertise, gain support monitor and communicate the successes and failures of a waste minimisation programme. Indicate how you would monitor energy, water and rework figures to the workforce. Implement a practical waste management system in the workplace, NB this does not have to be the entire site and you may choose one process or area initially.
