Introduction to Section 2

This section of the unit provides a BACKGROUND TO SOURCE MODELLING using the most commonly used model for a single stack.

On completing this section you should be able to:

  1. Explain the basic principles of a diffusive stack model.
  2. Explain the difference between time averaged plume envelope and instantaneous plume boundary.
  3. Estimate the ground level concentration of a pollutant, emitted at ground level, or as a plume from an elevated stack, at given distances downwind (based on the most popular source modeling equations. And on simple calculations)
  4. Given appropriate meteorological information calculate the plume rise for a stack.
  5. Understand the approximate nature and limitations of the models used.
  6. Produce a spreadsheet-based version of the model with a level of flexibility appropriate to your needs.
