A coking plant has decided to stop selling its coke oven gas and use it to generate electricity. A proposal is made to de-commission the gas cleaning plant and use gas, with all its hydrogen sulphide, to produce steam for a steam turbine. An acid gas scrubbing plant would be fitted to the effluent stack.

The alternative is to fit a state of the art Stretford plant upstream of the power situation and burn the gas in a combined cycle gas turbine.

Remember 40% of the gas produced will be burnt on the plant.

Consider what things would need to be investigated in order to determine the best practicable environmental option and what other factors would guide the decision of management if they had a relatively free hand.
