Training Your Personnel: Level 4

Unit 2 - Introduction

2.1 The Importance of Environmental Training
This module is about establishing the necessary training plans and records to run an effective environmental training programme. It will be relevant to companies setting up an EMS (environmental management system), and to companies who do not operate an EMS but want to improve their environmental performance.

Training

The act, process or methods for acquiring skills and knowledge, usually with the expectation of improved performance. Training may be either formal of on the job.

Environmental training is an important issue in many companies. For companies who are implementing an EMS, training can help to integrate environmental management into everyday working practices, and enable employees to carry out their work in a way that minimises significant environmental impacts.

Lack of Training

Emergency spillage training
Without proper training an EMS is unlikely to be effective. For example, if employees are not trained in the new environmental procedures, how will the company improve its environmental performance? Even in companies without an EMS, employees may still need to be trained to ensure that they comply with the requirements of relevant environmental legislation, and know how to deal with emergencies to minimise environmental damage.
