Raising the awareness of employees is best done by those with responsibility for implementing the
EMS. This may be the MR or the ESG. If it is to be the ESG, not all the ESG members have to be
involved. Depending on the size of the company and the resources available, one or two members of
the ESG could deliver the environmental awareness training to groups of employees.
At this level, the training should be more about what the environmental impacts of the company are,
what employees can do to improve their environmental performance at home, and why the company is
implementing an EMS. The company s environmental policy can also be disseminated at this stage if
one is available.
Awareness of environmental issues, and interest in the company s EMS implementation programme must
be fostered to get the commitment of workforce. If the MR or ESG provide the awareness training,
the workforce will know that the project has commitment from senior managers, and this should
encourage their own participation. It may be useful prior to undertaking training to ask all
employees to undertake an Environmental Awareness Questionnaire 1 - this will partly establish awareness levels
throughout the organisation. They can subsequently be given some literature - this
can be included within induction packs/manuals or as handouts to accompany general awareness training
sessions.
