5.4 Organisational Training Needs


An organisational training need is as it suggests one that applies to the whole organisation. These can divided into two groups:

Training needs generated by change:

  • new products
  • new technology
  • new legislation
  • new management systems
  • ownership of the organisation has changed
  • acquisitions, mergers, disposals or other structural changes
Training needs which must be met to produce change -

  • productivity is too low
  • morale is very low
  • the corporate culture is inhibiting development
  • people are not customer-focused
Occupational Training Needs

An occupational training need is one that applies to a particular category of employee, and there are two categories:

Training needs which are generated by change -

  • a new accounts software package
  • a tighter security system for access onto a site operated by security officers
  • a new CNC machine for the production department
Training needs which must be met to produce change -
  • Security officers are not friendly to visitors
  • Higher output is required from production personnel
  • Maintenance staff take a long time repairing machines
Individual Training Needs

An individual training need is an occupational need that applies to only one specific person.

Training needs which are generated by change -

  • one of the clerical staff is now responsible for completing training records
  • someone will be visiting an overseas office frequently and will need to learn a foreign language
  • a secretary has been asked to prepare a detailed training budget for the first time
  • a quality inspector has been appointed as an internal auditor for the company s new EMS and will need to learn how to undertake internal environmental audits
Training needs which must be met to produce change -

  • if the trainee had a driving licence, he could be out visiting clients on his own
  • if office manager could do the accounts, then the company would not need to use an accountant
  • the marketing manager needs to sell more
  • the project manager needs to keep to customer deadlines
