Many companies like to devise an environmental policy as a first step in implementing an EMS. The
policy must be company specific and should set out a company s commitment to:
- Comply with the applicable legislation and codes of practice
- Minimise the risk to the public from its operations
- Protect the natural environment
- Conserve resources and minimise wastes and emissions
- Train and supervise staff to ensure that they act in an environmentally responsible manner
- Require contractors to meet the same standards of environmental responsibility as the company itself
- Assess the environmental impact of any new site development
- Regularly assess the environmental impact of the organisation s operations.
- Consult and liaise (where applicable) with the local community on major new projects at the company s sites, and report publicly on the company s environmental performance.
