Appendix 7.29

Environmental Policy

Many companies like to devise an environmental policy as a first step in implementing an EMS. The policy must be company specific and should set out a company s commitment to:

  • Comply with the applicable legislation and codes of practice
  • Minimise the risk to the public from its operations
  • Protect the natural environment
  • Conserve resources and minimise wastes and emissions
  • Train and supervise staff to ensure that they act in an environmentally responsible manner
  • Require contractors to meet the same standards of environmental responsibility as the company itself
  • Assess the environmental impact of any new site development
  • Regularly assess the environmental impact of the organisation s operations.
  • Consult and liaise (where applicable) with the local community on major new projects at the company s sites, and report publicly on the company s environmental performance.
