Training Your Personnel: Level 4

Appendix 7.32

Deliveries

Procedures should be devised to ensure that there is sufficient provision for deliveries of environmentally hazardous substances such as oils and chemicals. This involves making someone responsible for supervising all deliveries and ensuring that storage tank levels are checked before deliveries to prevent overfilling. Deliveries are again another potential area that could cause water pollution through accidental spillages and leaks.

A key member of personnel should be made responsible for supervising deliveries.

Prior to deliveries being made, storage tank levels should be checked in order to avoid overfilling. Deliveries from tankers must always be undertaken within the bunded area.

All loading and unloading areas should be clearly marked and isolated from the drainage system.

Deliveries from tankers should be undertaken within a bunded area and automatic cut off valves fitted to delivery pipes to prevent overfilling and therefore, spillages.

Areas where hazardous materials are stored externally should always be roofed as this will decrease the amount of polluted water going to foul sewer.

Spillages

Contingency plans should be devised for spillages and all staff (where relevant) must be fully aware of these and the chemicals inventory. Spillages must always be soaked up with the absorbent granules in the spill kits provided.

Should a spillage of a chemical occur, all gulleys, drains and manholes should be blocked off and the spillage soaked up with an absorbent material such as sand. The contaminated, absorbent material should then be disposed of as Special Waste by a licensed contractor.
