Bunds

Bunds are sealed areas around tanks holding liquids. They should be large enough to hold 110% of the volume of the tank so that a complete failure of the tank would mean that all of the liquid would be captured and held in the bund. It allows for the bund to also hold some rainwater.

The floor of the bund must be impermeable to the liquid stored. The walls should be in good condition and without any breaks. There should not be any taps (if there are then they should be closed).

The bund should be regularly checked, cleaned out and maintained. Any rainwater should evaporate, but may be pumped out if necessary.

In the event of a leak the lost liquid should be pumped out into a tanker for proper disposal.

Where two or more tanks are within a bunded area then the bund volume has to be large enough to contain 150% of the content of the biggest tank.
