The Rummler and Brache Matrix

To implement BPR usually involves a fundamental examination of company systems. To do this Rummler and Brache have suggested a most useful framework. This involves a two dimensional matrix of 9 cells. The columns are Goals, Design, and Management and the rows are Organisation Level, Process Level, and Job or Task Level. The suggestion is that there are three levels to consider, which form a hierarchy. The organisation is made up of processes and each process is made up of jobs and tasks. These must all be defined. Then on each level we need to clarify the goals, to consider the design or structure, and to work out how to managed and measure the organisation, each process and each task within each process. The framework is also an excellent framework for Hoshin planning and management, discussed in the Planning section of this book.
