5.3.4  Nitrate Sensitive Areas

The Water Resources Act 1991 empowered Ministers to designate land as nitrate sensitive areas in order to control and regulate the release of nitrates into controlled waters arising from agricultural run off. The Environment Agency initiated the designation of these areas, of which the first lot was piloted in 1991. The number of such areas has now been enlarged by the Nitrate Sensitive Areas Regulation 1994.
