5.3.8.2  Pollution of Groundwater

Directive 80/68/EEC on the protection of groundwater against pollution caused by certain dangerous substances. The Groundwater Directive. was adopted in 1980. This also contains Black and grey list substances, which are similar to those in Directive (76/464/EEC). EU Member States are to take measures:

  • To prevent substances on the black list being discharged into groundwater.
  • To control the release of grey list substances in order to avoid pollution.
Other important EU water related legislation affecting the UK incorporates the Directive Concerning Urban Waste Water Treatment (91/271/EEC0 which has been implemented by the Urban Waste Water treatment (England and Wales) Regulations 1994, and the Urban Waste Water treatment (Scotland) Regulations 1994. These give objectives for providing sewage treatment capacity according to population levels in the areas served by these facilities.
