6.2.6  Prescribed Substances

Prescribed substance are those used or produced in the prescribed processes mentioned above that need to be regulated by the Environment Agency or the local authority. The entire list of prescribed processes and substances is given within the Environmental Protection (Prescribed Processes and Substances) Regulations 1991.

BATNEEC must be utilised in the prevention of the release of such substances into the environmental medium to which they are prescribed, or where this is not practicable, to decrease the release of such substances to the minimum amount possible and to make sure that they are harmless.

The prescribed substances to each medium are given in the following table:
