Unit 7:  Environmental Law And The Environmental Management System

7.3.4  Management Responsibility

A register of environmental regulations that forms part of a formal or informal EMS within a company should ideally be compiled mainly by a senior company executive and overseen by the board of directors. This is due to the fact that prosecutions and fines may result in any breach of environmental or health and safety regulations. It is the responsibility of top management to ensure that the company is compliant with all relevant regulations. A suitable screening procedure needs to be put in place.

In most organisations, the task of actually compiling the register of Environmental Regulations will be the responsibility of the operations director, or some one of similar standing. This person will probably be assisted by the environmental steering committee in preparing, distributing and updating the register, and possible, in the routine discussions with the regulatory bodies.
