These features should, in most cases, be present on a fixture and are fundamental to the
fixture`s basic operation. They are particularly important to the accuracy and
repeatability of component assessment.
Datums
Datum bushes, D-pads, spheres - used to accurately align fixture to the correct orientation and to calibrate the fixture.
Locators
Positions component in correct orientation on the fixture - typically through the use of a primary and secondary pin.
Clamps
Used to hold the component in place, once accurately positioned on locators. Must not interfere with measurement of component.
Orientation
Very important for less rigid components - best practice is to hold component in the same orientation as it is held
on the vehicle - "in car line".
Materials
Material requirements will depend on the operating environment, mass and location of component, and likely operating and handling
loads. Resin, aluminium and steel are often used. Critical features, such as locator pins, will typically be made of hardened steel.
Measurement
Can involve visual assessment of features, go-no-go checks, or data collection from DTI, transducers, measurement arm, CMM
(contact and non-contact).
