Introduction to the Fixtures Session

Scope of session

This session will consider the role played by gauges and fixtures in the maturation of a component or assembly. The information presented covers, but is not specific to, soft and hard, interior and exterior automotive trim, and body panels. Although based predominantly around automotive applications, the material in this module is relevant to a wide variety of engineering, product-based industries.

Session objectives

There are three main objectives to this session:

  1. To demonstrate the importance of fixturing and the key role it plays in the maturation process.
  2. To illustrate the various fixturing options available and to highlight relevant advantages and disadvantages depending on the application in question.
  3. To describe the various stages and requirements of the specification and procurement process, and to communicate best practice guidelines for the design of fixtures.

Learning outcomes

This session will improve the knowledge and understanding of the participant in the field of fixturing, to the extent that he or she is then confident and competent to identify the most suitable fixturing solution(s) for a particular situation, have an appreciation for the primary and secondary properties and features of the proposed fixture, and be able to make a significant contribution to (if not lead) the specification, procurement and buy-off processes.
