Damping materials are those that dissipate the mechanical energy of system by transforming it into heat, or another type of energy that is dissipated.
Within damping materials, the damping mechanisms must be emphasised. These are based on the viscous behaviour of a fluid lodged inside a cylinder that moves thanks to a piston.
Another type of material used with the aim of dissipation is the polymeric materials (PVC) covering surfaces and of joints (Polyurethane) with the purpose of diminishing the causal vibration energy of exciting systems (motor, etc).
Finally, one of the materials used in the automotive industry for the isolation of vibrations it is rubber. Normally, the properties of damping of this material together with his low cost results in its use in many applications.
Another interesting application of this type of material is its use it like a shock-absorbing spring in dampers placed in the loading system. Its function is to move the frequency of resonance of the system outside the range of frequencies of the excitation.
The difficulty of characterising this material together with the new solutions with other types of material has resulted in the reduction in the use of causes rubber solutions.
