To enter in non-linear viscoelastic region, deformations have to be sufficiently large. Furthermore, the effects on the material are time and rate of deformation dependent. In other words, the material is influenced by the deformation history that it has experienced.
Contrary to the linear viscoelasticity, there is an important difference between shear and elongation in the non-linear viscoelastic region.
