Introduction to TPM

TPM Activities Which People Need to Carry Out

  • Practice the 5S.

  • Carry out routine oiling.

  • Undertake to better understand your equipment.

  • Be alert for any signs that problems are developing.

  • Report any problems / leave notes at the end of your shift.

  • Suggest improvements to equipment and tooling.

  • Use human senses at all times.

You are the person closest to your equipment. You are the best placed to detect any problems.

But always remember not to touch any parts of your equipment without the proper training, especially where health and safety is concerned.

Use Human Senses

Often it is not necessary to have specialist technical knowledge of equipment in order to detect there is something wrong! Our natural senses can detect many signs of imminent problems.

  • Look for oil leaks, loose bolts, cracks, broken or missing parts, etc.,.

  • Listen for unusual noises: knocking, squealing, motor straining, rattling, etc.,.

  • Smell burning, leaking gas, chemicals, etc.,.

  • Feel unusual vibrations, increased / decreased temperature etc.,.

  • Taste any unusual airborne substances, e.g. smoke, gas, etc.,.

These signs should not be ignored. They may seem unimportant now but they could lead to a complete breakdown!
