Communicating the EIP

Internal communication should be as part of the normal process used to regularly report progress on achievement of the company's environmental policy.

The EIP can also be reported externally. Some companies produce small booklets on their environmental performance which give the link between the objectives and targets and the environmental policy and any actions that could have an impact upon stakeholders.

It is essential that the momentum of regular reports of the EIP is maintained in order to cement employee interest and involvement. The company needs to keep highlighting their progress set against the environmental policy in order to portray the fact the relevant areas are being focused upon.

Find two different prescribed processes- if you have an IPC or LAPC authorisation, you can use the process at you site, and complete the data sheets below for a fictitious company.

Within the cell beneath each, discuss possible improvement objectives and targets that could be included on an EIP.

(Under Integrated Pollution Control (Under the Prescribed processes and Substances Regulations 1991) Schedule A industrial processes require IPC authorisation and are regulated by the Environment Agency. Schedule B processes require a LAPC authorisation and are regulated by Local Authorities- these are less polluting processes, and the regulations cover emissions to air only.)

Hint: you may find the BATNEEC process guidance notes (Secretary of state notes are for Schedule B processes, Chief Inspector's notes for Schedule A) Secretary of State and Chief Inspector's process guidance notes useful. These can be found on micro fiche in many academic libraries, or can be ordered from HMSO.
