A planetary transmission with a pair of planetary trains and two hydraulically controlled clutches is front-mounted to the U transmission. This enables the starting and backing up functions. The continuously variable adjustment of the U transmission takes place by displacing the axially adjustable cone disks within the variator. This leads to a variation of the running radius of the thrust link band. Subsequently the driving torque is transferred over gear wheels onto the differential. For bigger vehicles with correspondingly higher transmission input torques, U transmissions in combination with a hydrodynamic clutch have already been realized (see figure).
