Introduction to TPM

4) Reduced Speed

Speed loss is the lost production caused by the difference between the designed (or standard speed) of the machine and its actual operating speed. Reasons for this difference may include: wear, damage, weaknesses in the equipment design.

Note: It is not unusual to find that the standard speed for a particular product is no longer valid, i.e. it was originally calculated for a different machine using a different production method and tooling.

The following steps are involved in reducing speed losses:

  1. Achieve standard speed for each product.

  2. Increase standard speed for each product.

  3. Achieve design speed.

  4. Surpass design speed.

The methodology for increasing speed should be similar to that used for reducing breakdowns, idling and minor stoppages, and defects.
