In order to fulfill the legal specifications of light intensities below the Bright-Dark Limit in the direction of opposing traffic, inspite of the high light intensities of the D1 and D2S-Bulbs, the transition of contrast is of high significance in the optical system of the headlight. Projection headlamps are especially suitable here. This idea has been realised by the Litronic (Light and Electronic) System. The system consists of a headlight, a gas-discharge lamp and an electronic pre-switching unit. In the second generation system, the pre-switching unit does not consist of two elements as before, namely the control unit and ignition unit and is not a direct part of the headlamp. The headlamp is separated from the pre-switching unit so that the constructional height of the headlamp could be reduced.
