Carbon Monoxide

CH + O2 -> CO2 + H2O

The chemical equation above describes in simple terms the complete combustion of a carbon-based fuel, e.g coal

Coal + oxygen forms carbon dioxide and water

However if there is not quite enough oxygen, the CO2 becomes CO, this is carbon monoxide, and the chemical equation is;

CH + O2 -> CO + H2O

Carbon monoxide is an "unsaturated" compound. It has a 200 times greater ability to react with the oxygen-carrying component in the human bloodstream than oxygen. Thus CO interferes with the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood and reduces the flow of oxygen in the bloodstream.

Less oxygen reaches the heart and therefore brain and other organs. Carbon monoxide is particularly dangerous to those suffering from cardiovascular disease. Exposure slows reflexes, causes headaches and unconsciousness, impairs visual perception/manual dexterity, and may affect fetal development

It is estimated that approximately 70% of carbon monoxide emissions are from motor vehicles.

Task 4. What is oxygenated fuel and why is it being used in Los Angeles?
