ESD - Measurement Standards

Major effect of ESD

When a high potential charged source discharges in a device, several phenomena are encountered :

  • Electric Field E.
  • Current I of ESD flowing in the chassis to the ground (and thus H field).

Different tests are proposed to highlight the effect of either E or I:

Due to its reproducibility, the Direct discharge by contact is preferred to the Direct discharge in the air, when it is possible; when the apparatus is insulated, this is not possible.

Discharge direct to the air

To use only on the testing apparatus parts known as isolated.

The operator brings the charged gun as quickly as possible near to the test apparatus.

This test cannot be easily reproduced:

  • The approach speed varies,
  • the aggression varies with room humidity.

All accessible points (by uses) are to be tested.
