Probability theory allows us to say that, if a sample is taken from a population that is normally distributed, it can be taken as representative of the population as a whole.
Note: within SPC it is common to use the term subgroup for a set of values sampled at random from the output of a process. In this course, you will find both sample and subgroup used.
