Techniques for Handling Interruptions which can't be
Avoided or 'Scheduled'
Some interruptions can neither be avoided nor scheduled. The
objective is to reduce the time of the interruptions. Remember
- one of the key causes of lengthy interruptions is yourself.
- Set time limits to the discussions.
- Avoid small talk and don't let your mind drift.
- Don't interrupt during discussions but make the interrupter
get to the point.
- If the request is lengthy and time-consuming, be prepared to
say No or promise to do it later when convenient (but make
sure you do).
- Try to close the conversation as soon as possible.
- Emphasise the amount and priority of work you're currently
doing.
- Glance at your watch, cite other imminent appointments and
remain standing to discourage prolonged interruptions.
- However remember that most interruptions are people. Be
ruthless with time, but gracious with people.
