Energy Improvement Strategies

Assessment

Once the objectives and targets for transport have been included within the EIP or as a stand alone issue, the improvement strategy needs to be audited in order to identify improvements made that can be brought up at management review. Simple audit checklists, relative to the objectives and targets set can be devised in order to aid managers conduct self-assessments of their transport use. Croner's Special Report on Transport Auditing (1996:7) gives an example audit form (of which the following table is an excerpt), that enables managers to assign scores to transport related categories. Each category is weighted in accordance with the company's priorities.


Checklist for suggested contents of a transport improvement programme.

5 points for documented evidence that all batteries, tyres and oil are disposed of responsibly.  
10 points for ensuring all suppliers and subcontractors, couriers and haulage vehicles are serviced to the required standard and batteries, tyres and oil are disposed in a in a responsible way  
3 points for recording tyres consumed every month  
1 point for two of the following:
  1. secure points for bicycles

  2. changing facilities for staff

  3. facilities for hanging dry wet clothes

  4. showers for staff who cycle.
