How can the company monitor consent parameters?

The most commonly addressed parameters that discharge consents may be set by the relevant authority in Direction letters are:

  • Biological oxygen demand (BOD)
  • Chemical oxygen demans (COD)
  • Nutrients 9such as phosphates and nitrates)
  • Ammonia
  • Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)
  • Turbidity (suspended solids)
  • pH
  • Temperature
  • Colour
  • Flowrate

EXERCISE

(a): If applicable to your site, find a copy of a discharge consent for your company. Make a note of the parameters and the limits set. Has your site ever exceeded a discharge consent limit? If it has, what was the procedure used to deal with this and how has the company attempted to stop this reoccurring. Attempt to complete the table provided also.

(b): What is the main information required by the Environment Agency when a company applies for a discharge consent?
