Monitoring Environmental Performance
Level 5 |
Unit 3
Monitoring Air Pollution |
Survey
Companies may wish to focus upon their atmospheric emissions for a number of
reasons including:
- Complaints from neighbours etc concerning issues such as particulate/ dust
deposition;
- Implementation of an EMS
- Pollution controls brought about by legislation
A site survey should be undertaken, if the company has not already undertaken an
environmental review, to identify all points of atmospheric emissions as a first
step.
The survey needs to identify all sources of emissions on site and their nature.
The survey should then measure those sources deemed most significant which will be
reliant upon:
- Using mass balance equations (a balance of raw material used and amount of
pollution emitted to air during its processing).
- Reviewing current legislation.
- Complaints from neighbours etc.
- Future proposals, for example, it may be likely that emissions of a
particular substance are set to increase in the future.
