Unit 3: Monitoring air pollution

Introduction

You will have already studied in the Introduction module to this course the effects of air pollution on humans and the environment. This unit will give you an overview of the means by which air emissions should be dealt with on site in order to continually improve upon them.

Overview of general monitoring requirements

Monitoring emissions to air is not necessary for all sites, but for many sites, particularly manufacturing / general industry, emissions monitoring is vital from a legislative point of view. As part of complying with legislation, and for those companies who have implemented EMS' it is important that stratgies for the reduction of such pollutants are implemented. Improvement Strategy Level 4 gives guidance on the generic principles of implementing Improvement Strategies even though it does not cover emissions to air.
