Monitoring Environmental Performance
Level 5
Preface

Structure of the Module and Outcomes

This module is designed to give you a sound basis for understanding the necessary environmental monitoring requirements in setting up an Environmental Management System (EMS), and/or for particular parts of your operation(s) that may be causing some concern. The module will focus upon the typical areas within a company that require environmental monitoring as part of an Environmental Management System (EMS), and generally.

The module will look at all environmental monitoring requirements of companies, particularly should they wish to implement an Environemntal Management System (EMS). Typical areas within a company that are monitored and measured will then be focused upon. It is far beyond the scope of this module to include every situation that can be monitored, but to give you an appreciation of why monitoring requirements are necessary and to look at this in the broad areas of:

  • air emissions,
  • discharges to water,
  • waste and energy;
  • transport;
  • environmental incidents,
  • environmental complaints;
  • record keeping

Due to the fact that monitoring works on many different levels- especially in EMS implementation, the key concepts only under the above headings will only be covered in this module.

Simple exercises have also been included in this module in order for you to enhance your knowledge on the subject and you will also find some recommended reading both in terms of books and websites.

You will have the opportunity to liaise with a consultant/tutor online should you have any queries or feel that you may need to raise certain issues.
