Pareto Analysis Exercise (4)

We can now use the values we've just worked out to calculate the percentage of the total number of defects which is assignable to each of the individual characteristics under investigation.

If you need to find what percentage one number is of another, you can simply divide the first number by the second one, and then multiply by 100. In the specific case we are dealing with here, this can be expressed as:

% = total for characteristic / total defects x 100

Taking the first characteristic, Blisters, the calculation then becomes:

4 / 83 x 100

Using the calculation given above, what percentage of the total defects is caused by blisters? (Round your answer to the nearest whole number.)

Continue on down the list of characteristics, calculating the percentage for each one (to the nearest whole number). When you have finished, you should have a list of percentages which add up to 100. Compare your results with the completed table shown on the next page.
