The previous chapter dealt with the roadbed resistances that a vehicle encounters in its motion. In order to keep a vehicle in motion however, these road resistance have to be overcome. This task is undertaken by the vehicle powertrain which generates and transfers energy to the vehicle in order to overcome the road resistances.
The vehicle powetrain can be classified as follows based on the functions of its individual components:
Powerplant (engine)
Speed converters (clutches)
Torque converter (transmission)
Distributing Gearbox (differential)
Brakes
