Dr. Murray Mackay, OBE, FREng, established the Birmingham Accident Research Centre at the University of Birmingham in1964 and ran it until 1996. He has specialised in developing crash investigation techniques, in understanding the characteristics of traffic crashes, the mechanisms of impact injury and the performance of safety systems and their limitations.

He is a founding director of the Parliamentary Advisory Council on Transport Safety and the European Transport Safety Council based in Brussels. He is president of the International Research Council on the Biomechanics of Impacts (IRCOBI). He has published and broadcast widely on transport safety matters and is currently working on projects with the World Health Organisation on traffic safety policies in developing countries.
