Environmental Law


This module has been designed to give you a sound understanding of the means by which UK environmental law is devised and implemented. This will provide you with an appreciation of how the law is likely to affect your business. You will also learn about the specific environmental laws relating to each of the three environmental media: land, air and water.

Through undertaking practical exercises, you will have a better understanding of which environmental laws currently, and will potentially affect your companies operations, and in turn, will be able to develop methods by which your company can keep up to date with the relevant legislation to your site and operations. This will ensure compliance with your existing or planned Environmental Management System (if applicable), or will simply ensure peace of mind and avoid hefty fines.

Structure of the Module

Following this introductory unit, which will cover the main legislative developments and the basic principles underlying UK environmental law, Unit 2 will focus more upon the way in which EU law and policy has shaped UK environmental law. This will follow into further developments in pollution control emanating from EU policy, namely Environmental Assessment and IPPC-which will be the focus of Unit 3- this will enable you to fully understand the means by which environmental law is enforced in the UK and understand the background to future proposals.

The subsequent units are predominantly concerned with environmental protection within the UK. They will cover the statutory regime of the three environmental media in a business related context (Units 4 and 5), which will provide an understanding of the impacts currently facing UK business and an insight into the value of the Environmental Management System from a legislative point of view (Unit 6).

Aims and Objectives

The module is predominantly aimed at executive management level in order to equip company directors with a useful background to the implementation of environmental law within the UK and the impact that it will have within their organisations.
