Some Autotrain course material is presented in an on-line lecture format (aka Talking Heads) called AutoView, using video streaming to provide a video lecture, along side a slide show presentation. The video material is designed to work through a good 56k modem connection (although it may take a few minutes to download all the slides and initialise the video player), however, if you have access to a faster internet connection, then you may (depending on the available plugins) be able to view a better quality video stream. For more information on using the presentations, please see the help file provided with the video presentations.

AutoView video presentations are capable of being delivered using a range of different video/audio streaming plugins. Most of the presentations are available in all formats, however, there may be cases where one or more option is not available.

  • Real Player : Real is the recommended format and is available for all presentations. We provide multi-bandwidth video streams for Real player allowing both modem and broadband users to get the best possible video/audio quality. Using Real player you can move backwards and forwards within the stream at will if you wish to only watch part of the presentation.
  • Quicktime : Quicktime streams are available for most presentations, in some cases these streams are limited to a single modem-rate stream, so broadband users will see no improvement in video/audio quality. You will need version 6 of quicktime to use the autotrain video streams.
  • Java Audio : This uses a Java Applet which can play an audio only version of the presentations and will require the Sun Java Plugin. The functionality of this player is limited to sequential playback only, you can't move backwards and forwards at will and should only be used as a last resort.
  • Windows Media Player : Support for windows media player is also available. You will require at least version 7 of media player. Currently, only Windows XP is supplied with a suitable version of media player, users of earlier windows versions will need to download an upgrade from microsoft. Windows 95 and NT 4 are not supported at all by Media player version 7 so you should use Real Player or Quicktime instead.

More information on the browser and operating system compatibility of the video presentations can be found on our browser notes page. AutoView was developed in-house by the Autotrain project, if you are interested in finding out more about AutoView, please contact us.

Downloading Real player

Please ensure that you choose the free (basic) version of Real player. If you are asked for a credit card number during the download/install process for real player, then you have the wrong version.
